Dogwood
Cornus Florida

Dogwood Fall foliageThe Dogwood is a popular tree due to its lovely Spring flowers and its beautiful purplish red leves in the Fall. The cornus florida, or flowering dogwood is one of the most popular dogwoods. It can be grown in Zones 5-9. Cornus florida grow up to 30 feet tall and makes a showy addition to any yard or garden. Dogwoods are easy to grow. However, they will not tolerate drought conditions.

Dogwoods should be fertilized only once a year and Fall is the prefered time to Dogwood Spring foliagefertilize immediately after the foliage ha dropped. If you can't fertilize in the Fall, fertilize in early March before it begins its growth. The pH of the soil should be maintained in the range of 4.5 to 6.5.

The Dogwood Borer is the primary pests of dogwoods. The insect can destroy a mature tree in one or two growing seasons if ignored. If enough borers overwinter in the trunk, the tree could die in one year.

When we have cool, rainy Spring weather, small gray spots with red borders often appear on the foliage. The leaves often curl and shrivel up. To control leafspot, apply an all-purpose fungicide such as Daconil. Other than these two conditions and preventing your Dogwood from being exposed to a severe drought they are easy to grow and enjoy.
