Summer Gardening

Orange Hibiscus Summer can be the time for lots of color in the garden. The months of July and August can be hard on plants, but there are some plants like the Hibiscus that thrive in high temperatures. In Zone 6, these plants can be used in containers or planted in the ground. If you do plant Hibiscus in the ground, keep in mind that they will not overwinter. This particular variety is not hardy in colder temperature zones. There is a hardy variety of Hibiscus that is considered a perennial. These plants have larger flowers and the foliage is different.

The Salvia and Dusty Miller pictured to the right complement each others colors and are excellent annuals that will survive the summer heat and maintain color until a heavy frost. The brilliant blue flowers on the Lobelia, pictured right, are beautiful in hanging baskets. Lobelia prefers the shade and does better in cooler temperatures.
