Ligustrum

Ligustrum in the springLigustrum are both deciduous and evergreen shrubs. The shrub to the left is one of the deciduous cultivars. It has fragrant white, almost cream- colored flowers in the spring. Some gardeners make hedges out of these shrubs, but I prefer to let them stand on their own as a specimen plant. If you don't prune this particular ligustrum, dark grey or blackish fruit appear in the fall to winter period.

Ligustrum are also known as privet and they are a trouble-free shrub that can become invasive. They grow very quickly and thrive in sun or part shade and can tolerate drought. They can tolerate most soil conditions. However, they do not like to be in wet soil. Another added benefit is that they can also tolerate salt making them a great plant for seaside landscapes. This particular Ligustrum was taken close to a brackish river.
