Forsythia

Forsythia in bloomForsythia is a shrub that is valued for its brilliant yellow or gold blossoms in early spring. They also make excellent cut flowers. Try cutting some of the branches off of your plants and bringing them indoors for a dramatic look. Forsythia is an arching and spreading deciduous shrub that can grow up to 10 feet and about as wide.

Forsythia is not fussy about its soil type, but fertilization and Forsythia in bloomcompost will encourage good growth. They prefer a sunny location, but they do not do well in climates that do not cool down below freezing in the winter months. Forsythia are one of the first blooming shrubs in the spring. When I see Forsythia in bloom, I know that spring is on its way. Forsythia can be pruned like the one pictured to the right. I prefer see them in their natural form.

Forsythia hedge in bloomForsythia can be grown as a single specimen plant or in masses where its weeping habit is accentuated as in the picture to the right.
