Water Lilies
Water ponds in the garden

September is the Month to:

  • Plant spring-flowering bulbs this fall for a spectacular display in the spring.
  • September is one of the best months of the entire year for seeding or sodding new lawns.
  • Fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Planting in the fall gives plants a chance to concentrate on developing good root systems without the stress of summer heat

September Odds and Ends
September is a great time to examine your garden and plan for next year. Most of the U.S. suffered from a drought this summer. You might want to rethink your garden with drought-tolerance as a main criterion.

Winter pansies, flowering Kale, flowering Cabbage, and Fall mums may be planted now, to give a little color to the garden when the summer's flowers have faded away.

Crape Myrtle, Viburnum, Hypericum, Butterfly Bush, and Black-Eyed Susan are just a few of the plants that provide color for the September garden.
