Autumn Joy
Sedum sieboldii
Sedums are perennials that make excellent ground covers and they are often used in naturalized situations. They have the characteristic of sitting on or affixing themselves to rocks and walls, which makes them one of the best choices for rock gardens. Sedums come in a variety of foliage colors and sizes.
Sedums are grown as much for their unusual freshy, succulent foliage as they are for their flowers. Sedums need a well-drained sandy soil that is rich with humus. Sedums prefer sunny location, but will perform fairly well in part sun. Sedums belong to the Stonecrop family.
The picture above is the variety 'Autumn Joy' in the spring before it forms its flowers. It is a bold and striking plant. It is a late bloomer with beautifuly pink flower that appear in August and September. Butterflies are very attracted to Sedum. The flowers are wide, and initially they are pale pink. As they mature and the weather turns colder, they deepen to salmon pink, then finally turn brick red. The dead flower heads of 'Autumn joy' still look attractive even in winter.
