Lavender
Lavandula

Lavender in bloomLavender, also called English lavender, blooms in the sun or in semi-shade. The flowers from lavender are aromatic and add fragrance to linens, sachets and potpourris. It is best to harvest the flowers of lavender plants just as they open, and hang them to dry in a dark room with plenty of ventilation. English lavender plants have also been used as a flavoring herb and as a medicinal herb to help induce sleep. There are many varieties of lavender. The picture to the left is Hidcote Lavandula, which is my favorite.

I like to plant lavender along path ways and around the edge of my patio. Lavender makes excellent border plants. When brushed against, the odor is wonderful. Lavender are drought tolerant and do not do well in moist soils.
