Japanese Anemone

Janpanese AnemoneThe Japanese Anemone is my favorite Fall flower. The plants grow up to five feet tall and look fabulous in clusters. Mine usually start blooming in mid-August and bloom through September. Anemones are outstanding plants for the late Summer and Fall garden. The branching stems of poppy-like flowes are superb for cutting. The plants spread to form a solid patch in a few years. They are a good low-maintenance perennial.

Anemones thrive best in slightly shaded situations, but not complete shade. When I had a large Norway Maple taken down because it was too old and decayed, the Anemones near the tree took off the next year. However, they do like the protection of larger plants. Their colors range from white to pink to red/purple.

Anemones thrive in most of the United States. If you live in the Southwest where it is hot and dry, you may have difficulty raising Anemones. If you live in onw of the colder sections of the United States, mulch the Anemones with light leaves or straw during the winter months.
