Purple Cone Flower
Echinacea purpurea
Echinacea, also known as Purple Cone Flower are a favorite flower of butterflies. Echinacea do well in the summer heat and bloom from late June until September in the Mid-Atlantic region. Echinacea also attract bumble bees. So, it is wise to place the plants in a border away from the house.
Purple Cone Flowers are similar to Rudbeckia or Black-eyed susans. Each flower on the Purple Cone Flower has a prominent central brown cone and the flowers around the cone are purplish pink and droop down.

Echinacea makes an excellent long-lasting cut flower.Plant Echinacea about 18 inches apart in full sun. They will tolerate partial shade and are drought tolerant, but do best in full sun with well-drained soil. Purple Cone Flowers grow to about 2-3 feet tall. There is also a white variety of Coneflower that looks great when combined with the pink/purple Echinacea.
