Croscosmia

Crocosmia in bloomCrocosmia is grown for its arching clusters of trumpet like flowers. The perennial is popular for both gardens and as a cut flower. I have several clumps in my yard that I use for adding color to the home during the summer. They make excellent cut flowers that last for about a week. They are like an exotic gladiola. They come in several shades of orange, red-orange, and yellow. My favorite is the red-orange variety.

Crocosmia flower in mid- to late summer when color is greatly appreciated in the garden. The flowers are funnel shaped with six spreading lobes. Crocosmia grows from corms and produce two to three foot tal clumps of ribbed sword-shaped leaves. Crocosmia needs full sun with evenly moist soil that is rich in organic matter. They are not hardy in regions that experience extreme cold in the winter. You can either dig them up and treat them as you would gladiola bulbs over the winter or provide a heavy mulch around the plants and hope for the best.

Crocosmia is one of my favorite perennials. The only pest that I have found that attacts the plant is the spider mite. The spider mite damages the foliage, but does not affect the beautiful, brillant flowers.
