Ajuga (Buggleweed)
Labiatae

Ajuga in spring bloomAjuga , sometimes called Buggleweed, is one of the perennial It spreads very quickly into a lovely groundcover that produces many runners that root wherever they touch the soil. Within a few seasons, the leaves grow so thick that they strangle out the weeds. I am particulary fond of Ajuga for this attribute. Ajuga grows under trees where a lawn is difficult to establish and Ajuga flowers profusely during May and June. The flowers, which vary in shades of pinks and purples depending on the variety, appear in little clusters on a 6-8"" spikes.

Ajuga does best in partial shade and moist soil, but it also tolerates quite dense shade and dry soil. The later conditions will not produce as many flowers and the Ajuga will not spread as quickly and profusely. However, I certainly recommend it. Plant Ajuga about 12" apart as it spreads quickly. Ajuga requires little attention once established.
