Deadnettle
Lamium purpureum
Purple Deadnettle is an annual winter weed that germinates in the fall and winter. It propagates by its seeds. It grows very quickly in the spring. They literally pop up overnight in garden beds and sparcely seeded lawns. Deadnettle has pink/purple flowers that are usually about six inches high. Deadnettle can be distinguished from other winter annual weeds by its purple tinged leaves. The flowers on Deadnettle appear from March to May. In cooler climates, it will flower all summer. The flowers die and disappear for the summer and return in the fall or winter when new seeds germinate.
Deadnettle can become a real problem for gardeners because it can take over a garden bed in no time. The easiest way to prevent germination of the seeds of this winter annual is to apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as Gallery in late summer or early fall before the weed seeds have germinated. You can purchase Gallery at most garden centers.
