Pocketbook Plant is the common name used for Calceolaria crena crenatiflora. Calceolaria is also refered to as Slipperwort and Slipper Flower. Pocketbook Plant belongs to the Snapdragon family Scrophulariaceae. It derived its name from its flowers, which look like slippers, or a pouch. Pocketbook Plant is an excellent blooming houseplant choice for the winter months.
The flower colors come in a range of bright colors from yellow to deep red, which are deeply massed. The blooming houseplant's leaves are very soft, hairy and large and the masses of flowers tend to hide the foliage.
The Pocketbook Plant is generally purchased as a potted blooming houseplant, treated as an annual flowering or seasonal flowering plant, and then discarded after it has completed blooming. The plant requires cool temperatures around 50 - 60 degrees F. to be at its best. For this reason, you generally see it at garden centers during the winter months.
Calceolarias need bright light, but never any direct sunlight. Outside, the plant should be grown in partial shade because the flowers will burn in full sun. The soil should be well-drained and moist, but never wet or soggy. If the plant is planted too deeply or over-watered, stem rot is likely to occur.
The plant favors both good air circulation in the home as well as high humidity. Placing the plant on a pebble tray containing water will help provide extra humidity. The plant must not be subjected to cold draughts. Once the plant is blooming, fertilizing is not required. After the plant has bloomed, the leaves die back to soil level, and the plant is generally discarded if used as a blooming houseplant.
