August is the Month to:
- Plant fall blooming Crocus
- Pay attention to watering newly planted trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. They need more water than established plants. Do not depend on the rain. Container gardens and hanging baskets dry out quickly in the July and August heat. Check them daily.
- Avoid applying insecticides, fungicides or fertilizers when the temperature is above 85 degrees. Spray in the early morning or evening.

August Odds and Ends
The list of gardening tasks is short in August, but there are still some things to be done. Weeding and providing water to your plants are the most important. Weed seeds germinate and grow quickly because of the increased water that is necessary to help plants survive the summer heat.
Think about the birds and change the water in your birdbath regularly to prevent mosquito larvae.
Crape Myrtle, Viburnum, Hypericum, Butterfly Bush, and Black-Eyed Susan are just a few of the plants that provide color for the August garden. |
