Zinnia

Zinnia in bloomThe Zinnia is treated as an annual in northern regions and as a perennial in southern regions. The Zinnia blooms from summer to fall and is grown and known for its solitary long-stemmed flowers that come in a variety of bright colors. Zinnia grows fairly rapidly to 24-30 inches.

Zinnia elegans is the familiar species, originally from Mexico and is a warm-hot climate plant. Its leaves are lance-shaped and sandpapery in texture, and height ranges from 1 to 3 feet.

Butterflies and hummingbirds are particularly attracted to Zinnias, and many gardeners add zinnias specifically to attract them. Also, Zinnias are popular garden flowers that are used for cut flowers. Zinnias are usually grown from seed, preferably in fertile, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, in an area with full sun. They will reseed themselves each year in warmer climates.

Zinnias are among the few annual bedding plants that continue to perform through hot southern summers, all the way up to the first frost.
