Regal Geranium
Pelargonnium
The spectacular large blooms of the Regal Geranium, which is also known as the Martha Washington Geranium come in shades of red, purple, pink, and white. The variety pictured left is called 'Kimono'. Regal Geraniums grow to a height of approximately 2 feet high and they have strong, woody steams. Regal Geranium's leaves are stiff and pleated. They flower in late spring and summer. They are treated as an annual in colder regions because they are frost tender. They require some afternoon shade during the hot summer months and require more water than most geraniums. Because they dislike intense heat and humidity, Regal Geraniums are well suited for northern regions' summers. If you fertilizer them weekly, they will bloom all summer.
If you want to overwinter your Regal Geraniums in cooler climates, it is important to bring them in before danger of frost. After the plants finish their blooming period, cut them back hard in order to keep them compact.
There is a scented-leafed species with deeply lobed and serrated-edged, dark green leaves that look like oak leaves. The leaves and stems are stickly to the touch and very aromatic. This variety has purple-pink flowers. All varieties of Regal Geraniums are suitable for both planting in masses as a bedding plant and as container plants. Just remember that the plants are frost tender.
