Plants for Clean Air

Studies by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) prove tht plants not only beautify indoor environments, but they make them healthier to live in. NASA studied the benefits of plants for use in future space stations and closed environments. Properly designed indoor planting can provide an inexpensive, refreshing low-tech means of removing pollutants from the air in homes and offices.

Indoor air is polluted from the various fibers such as carpets, fabrics, wall coverings and solvents such as wallboard, paints, varnishes and furniture we use to build and decorate our homes and offices. NASA suggests that two potted plants per 100 square feet of floor space will help to clean and to refresh the air in the average home or office.

Any indoor environment benefits aesthetically by the addition of the green color of plants. No matter what the color scheme is in your home or office, plants will be a welcome addition to the design simply because of their green color. Scientists agree that green is a soothing color and that it can have profound effects on the moods of people.

Just about every tropical indoor plant and many flowering plants are great removers of indoor air pollutants. The chart below contains plants in the NASA study that most effectively removed pollutants from the air.
