Adding Fragrance to the Garden
Everyone has their favorite fragrances, and maybe you already include fragrant plants in your garden. But, why not think about some of the many different ones that can be included. The spring and summer are good times to visit parks and garden centers to see what the fragrance of popular flowers is like.
Remember that not all roses are fragrant. Many of today’s garden roses have been developed for their color, form and disease resistance. Fragrance unfortunately is not always there. Many are, however, quite fragrant.
When it comes to flowering shrubs the most noted for fragrance are Lilacs (pictured left) and Mock Orange. Their fragrances are decidedly distinct and different, yet widely appreciated. If your garden layout can accommodate it, why not plant your favorite Lilac or Summer Sweet Clethra near your bedroom window. Always welcome are the fragrant Viburnums with their fragrant flowers in the Spring. These include the Burkwood Viburnum and the Fragrant Snowball, Viburnum Carlcephalum, with large clusters of very fragrant white flowers in May.

Summer fragrance in the garden is very pleasing and especially near a patio or sitting area. Nicotiana or night flowering tobacco has a particularly pleasant scent mainly at night. My favorite is Night Blooming Jasmine. It blooms for one week once a month throughout the summer and is fabulous.I leave it out all summer, bring it in just before a hard frost, prune it severly and water it sparingly over the winter. I bring it out about the first of May, place it on my porch and enjoy the delicious smells in the night.
Other annual flowers with fragrance of note are Petunias, Sweet Alyssum, Pansies, Verbena and Sweet Peas. Many people also consider Marigolds to have a pleasant fragrance.
Why not consider a cutting garden to provide fragrant bloom for the house? If you have a large enough area for vegetables and can spare some room start in the fall by planting some spring bulbs such as Hyacinths and Daffodils for cutting. Plant some Sweet Peas for cutting along a fence at the edge of the garden. Don’t forget it never hurts a large shrub such as Lilac or Viburnum, to cut a few clusters of bloom to bring the fragrance indoors where it can soon pleasantly fill a whole room.
