Container Gardening
Many gardeners don't have space for a flower or a vegetable garden. Container gardening is an excellent choice for people who live in apartments or condos. A balcony, deck, or patio provides space for a beautiful and edible display of plants. I grow mostly perennials in my garden beds because they come back year after year. But, I like to have added color, which perennials can't provide on a consistent basis. So, I pot up a lot of containers with petunias, marigolds, lobelia or other annuals that add color to my porch and patio.
Also, if you live in an apartment and you don't have an outside area for plants, consider using a sunny window sill for growing herbs and blooming plants.
Even gardeners that have space for vegetable, herb and flower gardens find the convenience of growing in containers advantageous. For one thing, container gardening is less time consuming and can produce a beautiful display, but on a smaller scale.
One thing to be aware when considering container gardening is that they need to be watered almost on a daily basis during the hot summer months, particularly if they are in the direct sun. Shady annuals such as the lobelia in the container to the left will last longer because they need to be placed in a shady, cool area.
